What does the term "vitamins" mean?

Vitamins are organic compounds naturally found in food. Vitamins help us absorb nutrients from foods we eat. Vitamins cannot be produced by the body. They must be acquired from food.

Two types of vitamins exist: water-soluble vitamin and fat-soluble vitamin. Water-soluble vitamins dissolve readily in water. Examples include vitamin C,B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (niacin), B6 (pyridoxine), folic acid, biotin, pantothenic acid, and choline. Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue. Some examples include vitamin D and E, K, A and beta carotene.

Vitamins can be classified by their biological activity. There are eight major vitamin groups:

  • A – Essential for normal growth, and the maintenance of good health.
  • C - essential for nerve function and energy generation.
  • D - necessary for healthy bones and teeth.
  • E is necessary for good vision, reproduction.
  • K – Required for healthy nerves & muscles.
  • P - vital for building strong bones andteeth.
  • Q – aids digestion of iron and iron absorption
  • R is required for the production of red blood cells.

The recommended daily allowance of vitamins (RDA), varies according to age, gender, physical condition, and other factors. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sets RDA values.

For adults over 19 years, the RDA is 400 mg per day for vitamin A. For fetal development, pregnant women need 600 mg per day. Children ages 1-8 require 900 micrograms per day. Babies under one-year old require 700 mg per day. Between 9 and 12 years of age, however, this drops to 500 mg per day.

Children aged between 1-18 years require 800 micrograms of sugar per day, while overweight children need 1000 micrograms. Children who are underweight receive 1200 micrograms every day to meet their nutritional requirements.

Children aged 4-8 years old who have been diagnosed as having anemia require 2200 micrograms of vitamin C per day.

2000 micrograms is the minimum daily intake for adults over 50 years old to maintain good health. Because of their higher nutrient needs, women who are pregnant or nursing need 3000 mg per day.

Adults over 70 years of age need 1500 micrograms per day since they lose about 10% of their muscle mass each decade.

Women who are pregnant or lactating need more than the RDA. Pregnant women require 4000 micrograms daily during pregnancy, and 2500 micrograms every day after birth. Breastfeeding mothers need to consume 5000 micrograms every day when breastmilk has been produced.
